Qwa’Maurie A. Deaver, 18, Obituary, Columbia Death: Beloved Resident Remembered After Fatal Deputy-Involved Shooting

The Columbia community is mourning the tragic loss of Qwa’Maurie A. Deaver, an 18-year-old whose life ended during a violent overnight incident involving deputies from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department. According to the Richland County Coroner’s Office, the events began shortly after midnight when deputies responded to reports of shots fired in the 200 block of Sagamare Road. Although no injuries occurred there, investigators discovered that gunfire had struck a residence and multiple vehicles, signaling a dangerous situation in a residential area. Less than two hours later, deputies were dispatched to another shooting in the 400 block of Spring Oak Drive, where a home had also been struck. Authorities believe the incidents were connected as they worked to trace those responsible.

K9 Specialists Zaid Abdullah and Samantha Ramirez, along with Master Deputy Nicolas Carroll, tracked a K9 scent trail for approximately 30 minutes, leading them to a residence in the 300 block of Legend Oaks around 2:20 a.m. Deputies identified themselves and issued commands, but multiple individuals reportedly opened fire with rifles and pistols. Deputies returned fire while taking cover until reinforcements arrived and the scene was secured. When the situation was under control, one person had been detained, and Qwa’Maurie Deaver was found deceased.

The investigation is ongoing, with authorities gathering evidence, reviewing body camera footage, and speaking with witnesses. Residents in surrounding areas have been asked to provide any video or information that could assist in understanding the full circumstances of the events.
