ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A large fire at a recycling facility in Albuquerque’s South Valley prompted a major emergency response today, drawing firefighters from multiple agencies as crews worked to contain intense flames and protect nearby properties.
The fire was reported near Broadway Boulevard SE, south of Rio Bravo Boulevard, where firefighters arriving at the scene encountered heavy smoke and rapidly spreading flames. Due to the size and complexity of the incident, emergency officials quickly upgraded the response to a second-alarm fire, bringing in additional personnel and equipment to assist with suppression efforts.

More than 50 firefighters from Bernalillo County Fire Rescue and Albuquerque Fire Rescue responded to the blaze. Crews focused on preventing the fire from spreading beyond the facility while simultaneously protecting neighboring businesses, structures, and infrastructure. The large volume of combustible recyclable materials fueled the fire and generated a towering plume of dark smoke that could be seen from several parts of the Albuquerque metropolitan area.
Authorities said the fire eventually consumed approximately two acres before firefighters were able to gain control. Even after the main body of the fire was contained, crews remained on scene for several hours extinguishing hot spots and monitoring conditions to prevent flare-ups or rekindling.
As firefighting operations continued, the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office implemented road closures along portions of Broadway Boulevard near Prosperity Avenue. Traffic was redirected away from the area to provide emergency responders with safe access to the scene and to reduce risks to motorists. Residents and commuters were encouraged to avoid the area and use alternate routes until operations were completed.
No injuries were immediately reported among firefighters, facility employees, or members of the public. However, officials expressed concern regarding air quality due to the significant amount of smoke produced by the burning materials. Nearby residents were advised to remain alert to changing conditions and limit outdoor exposure if smoke drifted into surrounding neighborhoods.
Fire investigators are now working to determine the cause of the blaze. Investigators will examine the property, review potential ignition sources, and evaluate whether environmental or operational factors contributed to the incident. Officials have not indicated whether foul play is suspected, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The fire drew considerable attention throughout Albuquerque as residents observed the large smoke column rising above the South Valley. Many shared photos and videos on social media while monitoring updates from local authorities.
Although the fire has been brought under control, officials continue to assess the damage and investigate how the incident began. Additional information is expected to be released as the investigation progresses and crews complete their work at the scene.
