The Muscatine community is grieving following a tragic incident in which six people were found dead in what authorities believe was a domestic-related shooting involving members of the same family. The suspected gunman also died after taking his own life as law enforcement closed in, bringing the total number of fatalities to seven.
According to Muscatine Police Chief Anthony Kies, officers were initially dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of Park Avenue shortly after noon on Monday following reports of a shooting. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered four individuals inside the home who had suffered fatal gunshot wounds. All four were pronounced dead at the scene.

As the investigation quickly expanded, authorities received information suggesting additional victims were connected to the incident. Officers later located a man deceased from gunshot wounds inside a residence in the 1500 block of Mill Street and another male victim in the 800 block of Grandview Avenue. These discoveries raised the total number of victims to six, not including the suspect.
Police identified the suspected shooter as 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland of Muscatine. Officials stated that McFarland fled the initial scene before officers arrived, prompting an urgent search across the city. He was later located near the Riverfront Trail close to the pedestrian bridge. According to authorities, McFarland died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound as officers approached.
Preliminary findings suggest the shootings stemmed from a domestic dispute, and investigators believe the victims were members of McFarland’s family. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased, as next of kin are still being notified.
The Muscatine Community School District confirmed that two of the victims were district employees and two were students, deepening the impact of the tragedy across the city’s education system. Counseling services and crisis support have been made available to students, staff, and families across multiple schools, including Muscatine High School and several elementary campuses.
Officials announced a community vigil scheduled for Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Muscatine High School, where residents are expected to gather to honor the victims and support grieving families. Law enforcement agencies, including state and county authorities, continue to assist in the investigation as multiple crime scenes remain active.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as detectives work to establish a full timeline of events. Officials also asked the public to avoid the riverfront area as investigations continue.
As Muscatine begins to process the scale of the tragedy, the community is coming together in grief, support, and remembrance for the lives lost in one of the most devastating incidents in its recent history.
